The current Northwest Indiana Rugby club, a notable presence in the Indiana rugby scene, is a result of the merger between the Illiana Rugby Club—an amateur men's rugby club founded in 2002 and a women's club established in 2015 by a group of passionate Marines—and the Northwest Indiana Rugby Club, which has its roots in 1973 as the Gary Rugby Club, founded by dedicated steelworkers.
